The Department of Astrophysics at the University of Vienna offers a University Assistant (Postdoc) position within the extragalactic group of Prof. Bodo Ziegler for 4 years starting summer 2016 with application deadline 10th May 2016.
Area of work:
We are seeking a highly motivated and qualified senior astronomer able to conduct independent research and to attract funding and observing time. We expect excellence in optical/nearinfrared astronomy with strong expertise in multi- object and 3D/IFU spectroscopy and very good experience with galaxy kinematics and morphologies. Our group participates in large programs using HST and ESO/VLT to quantitatively study distant galaxies, surveying local galaxies with IFU spectroscopy and investigating x-ray detected groups and clusters (galaxy kinematics, stellar populations, star formation, AGN activity). Applicants with a proven record of spectroscopic analysis of galaxy kinematics will be given highest priority.

Extent of Employment:
40 hours/week. Occupation group (salary) in accordance with collective bargaining agreement. Contract includes health & unemployment insurance and long-term care.
Profile:
Applicants must have a PhD degree in astronomy, astrophysics, or a closely related field. A very good knowledge of English and the ability to work in teams, high oral and written expressiveness as well as didactic qualifications are required. The selected researcher is expected to conduct frontier research with advanced knowledge for reducing and analyzing datasets, to write papers, to present results at international conferences, to actively propose observations with ground-based and/or satellite facilities, to take part in raising third-party fundings and to actively participate in institute life. Participation in teaching and education on a modest level (up to 4 hours per week) is expected from the applicant as well.
