A position for a research engineer, expert in optical design for astronomical instrumentation is offered at CRAL, Lyon, for the development of innovative optical designs for astronomical instruments in the framework of international projects. | ▸ more | The main activities are: the development and optimization of optical designs for complex astronomical instruments or sub-systems, such as Spectrographs or Integral Field Units; qualification and validation of optical design performance of instruments or sub-systems at different steps of the project; management of the sub-system optical activities for concept phases of new projects, in the framework of international consortia; production of technical specifications; participation to technology research activities, i.e. new integral field spectrographs concepts; technology watch in optics; participation to Assembly, Integration and Tests activities for optical modules.
* Skills: Extensive knowledge of principles and implementation of optical engineering techniques; extensive knowledge of optical design software, especially Zemax; extensive knowledge of optical design optimization, opto-mechanical tolerancing, straylight & ghost analysis and thermal analysis; knowledge of the optical systems used in the last generation of astronomical instruments: Integral Field Spectrographs, Adaptive Optics, Wide Field Camera,etc.; knowledge of optical components used in astronomical instruments: optical fibres, image slicers, diffraction gratings,etc.; knowledge of methods implemented in astronomical projects; general knowledge of international large telescope environment, especially the one of the VLT and the E-ELT; general knowledge of physics; good knowledge of English (level 2); experience in presentation techniques and in facilitating meetings.
