4-year Postdoc observational asteroseismology, spectroscopy, and astrometry with TESS/Gaia/SDSS | Closing date: 2018-09-14 Contact: Conny Aerts |
PARADISE: Pushing asteroseismology to the next level with TESS, Gaia and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, is a new Univ. of Leuven funded project in stellar astrophysics (2019 to 2024, PI Conny Aerts). In synergy with the ongoing ERC Advanced grant MAMSIE (fys.kuleuven.be/ster/research-projects/mamsie/mamsie), it aims to calibrate some of the most uncertain aspects of the theory of stellar interiors, with focus on intermediate- and high-mass stars. We expect the postdoctoral researcher to perform a whole suit of observational analyses in terms of stellar variability and asteroseismology. | ▸ more |

The Leuven asteroseismology team welcomes applications for a 4-year (2+2) postdoc position to work on several WPs of the MAMSIE and PARADISE projects. We expect the postdoctoral researcher to perform a whole suit of observational analyses, from data reduction/processing to detailed interpretation of the data in terms of stellar variability and asteroseismology. A specific aim is to discover and unravel gravity-mode oscillations in single and binary stars of intermediate and high mass, from combined Kepler/K2/TESS photometry, Gaia DR2/DR3 astrometry, and SDSS-V spectroscopy using (un)supervised clustering methods. These are being developed at the Institute of Astronomy (IoA), within the coordinated activities of the TESS Asteroseismic Science Consortium (TASC). The PARADISE work will be done in close collaboration with PhD students, postdocs, and stellar variability classification experts at the IoA. Expertise in the analysis and interpretation of space-based photometric and ground-based spectroscopic data of pulsating single and binary stars is a requirement. Knowledge of stellar variability, of classification methods, and of high-performance computing are assets.
The Host Institute
The IoA of KU Leuven (Belgium) is a vibrant research group of some 65 scientists, engineers, and administrative staff (fys.kuleuven.be/ster), including 6 full-time and 3 part-time professors. The institute is an expertise centre in stellar astrophysics. It is active in several international consortia, involving telescopes at observatories worldwide and in space. Members of the institute have access to parallel computing facilities at KU Leuven. The IoA is responsible for the organisation of the 2-year Master in Astronomy & Astrophysics at the Faculty of Science and operates the 1.2m Mercator telescope at La Palma Observatory, Canary Islands. The institute has a long tradition in instrumental, observational, and theoretical studies of stellar evolution.
The Contract
The successful applicant will perform research in the context of MAMSIE an PARADISE, and will take up modest project teaching tasks in the Bachelor of Physics or Master of Astronomy & Astrophysics. Postdoctoral researchers at KU Leuven have the opportunity to be supervisor of bachelor and master thesis research, as well co-supervisor of PhD students. The postdoc will also be able to take up personal training in science and people management, science communication, and grant application writing with the aim to develop a personal independent career track. The selected candidate will be offered a 2-year contract (with a prolongation for another 2 years subject to positive evaluation) with a salary commensurate to the standard scale for postdoctoral researchers in Flanders, including social and medical insurance as well as pension rights. The starting date is flexible, but no later than 1 January 2019. The IoA is committed to equal opportunity employment, with no discrimination based on gender, religion, age, or race.
Requirements and Instructions to Apply
Applicants must hold a PhD degree in astrophysics or own an equivalent diploma; the degree must be dated at the latest two months before the position can be taken up. High proficiency in English is assumed. The short-listed applicants will be invited for an interview (live or via Skype) on 27 or 28 September 2018.
The application package should be sent as one single PDF containing:
a curriculum vitae, with full publication list;
a 1-page statement of interest;
names and contact details of three experts who are prepared to send confidential recommendation letters should they be requested to do so.
The application material should be sent by e-mail to Dr. Clio Gielen (Clio.Gielen @ kuleuven.be) with subject ?PD-PARADISE-applicantname? at the latest by 14 September 2018. Applications that are non-compliant with the instructions will not be considered.
