The successful candidate will spend the first year at the KU Leuven, Belgium, while the remaining 3 years will be spent at Ohio State University (OSU), USA. Frequent research stays at the KU Leuven are foreseen during the three years at OSU. We expect the PhD candidate to perform a suit of observational analyses, from data reduction/processing to detailed interpretation of the data in terms of stellar variability, asteroseismology, and high-resolution spectroscopy.
The successful applicant will perform research in the context of above-described project. The salary will be commensurate to the standard scale for PhD students in Belgium and OSU. In Belgium, it includes full social and medical insurance as well as pension rights. At OSU, it includes medical insurance and retirement benefits will depend on the type of visa. The successful PhD applicant will have to register at, and comply with, the regulations of the Doctoral School of the KU Leuven. As part of the doctoral requirements, the student will have to take up a teaching task of maximally 4 hours/week in one of the Bachelor (in Dutch) or Master (in English) programs of KU Leuven. PhD students at IoA are also required to perform at least one Mercator telescope observing run of 10 nights per year for the pooled IoA long-term monitoring programs. The starting date is flexible, between 1 January and 1 July 2019.
Requirements and Instructions to Apply:
Applicants must hold a university degree in Astronomy, Physics, or Mathematics at an advanced level (e.g., a MPhys or MSc degree or equivalent) or be on track to obtain such a diploma by mid 2019. High proficiency in English is assumed. The short-listed applicants will be invited for an interview (live or via Skype).
