1. EWASS 2014: Opening of registration and abstract submission

Registration and abstract submission is now open for the European Week of
Astronomy and Space Science (EWASS) to be held in Geneva from 30 June to 4 July.
The overall program and the description of the individual Symposia, Special
Sessions and Meetings is available on the EWASS 2014 website:
	http://eas.unige.ch/EWASS2014/

Fees and other information on the registration are given at:
	http://eas.unige.ch/EWASS2014/registration.jsp

Please note that EAS members benefit from a reduced fee for early registration.
The deadline for early registration is: April 15, 2014.

Abstract submission for an oral or poster contribution to a given session is
also open with the information given at:
 	http://eas.unige.ch/EWASS2014/abstract_submission.jsp

To allow the scientific committees of the sessions to evaluate the abstracts
before the early registration deadline, the abstract submission deadline had to
be set relatively early on: March 15, 2014.

This is also the deadline for EAS grant requests to be submitted at:
	http://eas.unige.ch/ewass.jsp?tab=grants

Note that grants are preferentially given to young EAS members, students and
postdocs, who present a talk.

2. New EAS on-line membership fee payment system

You should by now have received the annual EAS letter with the status of your
fee payment. The 2014 fees can be payed securely using the new on-line payment
system accessible at:
	http://eas.unige.ch/members.jsp?tab=payment

We thank those of you who already payed their membership fee and ask for your
patience in case the status of our 2014 payment has not yet been updated.

If you haven't payed yet, we encourage you to do so before March 31st. The
individual online payment is the preferred way, but payment through an
affiliated society is still possible for all members in 2014. The list of
societies which will continue to collect membership fees after 2014 will be
communicated later.

3. Announcement of opportunity for the International Time at the Canarian
   observatories

The International Scientific Committee (CCI) of the Roque de los Muchachos
(ORM, La Palma) and Teide (OT, Tenerife) observatories invites applications
for International Time Programmes (ITP) on telescopes installed at these
Observatories, in accordance with the provisions of the Agreement on
Cooperation in Astrophysics and its Protocol.

The deadline for the 2014 call for proposals is midnight, February 28, 2014.

4. International Conference "Cosmic Rays - Beyond The Standard Model(s)"
San Vito di Cadore, Italy, 16-22 March 2014

One hundred years after their discovery great progress has been made in
understanding the origin of the cosmic rays, but many questions remain.
This conference is being held to critically examine the possible contributions
of various sources to the Galactic cosmic ray population and to suggest future
lines of research.

The conference will take place in the Conference centre of San Vito di Cadore,
a beautiful resort in the Italian Dolomites. There will be a mixture of
invited reviews, contributed talks, poster presentations and discussion
sessions allowing plenty of time for scientific debate and critical
examination of the origin of cosmic rays in a stimulating environment. The
opening introductory talk will be given by Roger Blandford.

Pre-registration is now open at the conference web site:
	http://www.crbtsm.eu/
where further information can be found.

5. Conference announcement: Xth Rencontres du Vietnam on "Exoplanetary Science"
   ICISE, Vietnam, 20-26 April 2014

Since 1993 the Rencontres du Vietnam , which is an official partner of UNESCO,
has organised international scientific conferences and schools to foster
exchanges between Vietnamese or Asia-Pacific scientists and colleagues from
other parts of the world.

The Rencontres du Vietnam on Exoplanetary Science will focus on the newly
emergent, but already mature, science of exoplanetary research. The conference
will consist of plenary sessions for invited indepth oral presentations (review
talks and talks on specific specialised topics), and contributed papers, in the
form of relatively short oral papers or posters. We will aim to achieve a
balance between review talks, provocative talks given by recognized specialists,
and shorter contributions, special emphasis being placed on active participation
by younger researchers and post-docs. Parallel sessions are foreseen, and are
being organised as the need arises.

Please refer to the conference site for more information at:

6. UKSEDS National Student Space Conference 2014 (NSSC2014)

The 26th Annual UKSEDS National Student Space Conference will be held on the
weekend of 1-2 March 2014, and hosted by Leicester AstRoSoc at the University
of Leicester.

The conference will bring together students, academics and professionals from
across the country to share knowledge of space, discuss the challenges facing
the sector, and to create new links between groups. It will feature talks by
leading space science and industry figures, and opportunities to take part in
discussions and networking events.

In time-honoured tradition, UKSEDS will have a special social event, to be
held on the evening of the 1st March at the University of Leicester.

electromagnetic identification of gravitational wave triggers

The LIGO Scientific Collaboration and the Virgo Collaboration have issued an
open call for professional astronomers interested in signing agreements for
the identification of electromagnetic counterparts to gravitational wave
triggers found in the next science runs of LIGO and Virgo Advanced detectors,
which will start in 2015. You can find details on how to submit your
application for this program in the web page:
