Research Fellow in Extragalactic Astrophysics | Closing date: 2019-01-04 Contact: Amelie Saintonge |
The Astrophysics group at University College London (UCL) invites applications for a postdoctoral research fellow position in extragalactic astrophysics and the physics of the interstellar medium, working with Dr. Amelie Saintonge. The position is funded for 2 years in the first instance, with a starting date of March 2019 although a later start can be negotiated. Generous funds will be provided for conference travel, collaboration visits, observing runs, computing and publications. Deadline for applications is January 4, 2019. | ▸ more | The aims of the Royal Society-funded research group led by Dr. Saintonge are to investigate tracers of the cold interstellar medium applicable in the extreme conditions of very low mass galaxies and into the epoch of reionisation, and to use large multi-wavelength data sets and modelling tools to investigate star formation and galaxy evolution over cosmic time.
The candidate appointed will be expected to conduct research towards the goals of this project, as well as his/her own ambitious projects, with the possibility of collaborating with other member of the UCL Astrophysics group.
The successful candidate will join an active research team and will be expected to play a leading role in answering key open questions in the areas of interstellar medium physics and galaxy evolution. They will have access to state-of-the-art observational and computational facilities, and the opportunity to join large research collaborations (e.g. JCMT surveys, DESI, LSST).
The successful applicant will have a PhD in Astrophysics by the starting date of the position. We particularly invite applications from candidates with experience in sub-mm/mm/radio observations (particularly interferometry), ISM physics, radiative transfer modelling, and/or galaxy evolution. Candidates should also have excellent written and verbal communication, as evidenced by a track record of publishing in Astrophysics journals, and presenting their work at high-profile international conferences.
Further details and instructions to apply online are available following this link. Applicants will need to provide a CV (including a list of publications), a statement of research interests and plans (3 pages maximum), and the contact information for three references. A cover letter can be included using the "Statement in Support of your Application" section of the online form. Reference letters should be emailed directly to a.saintonge @ ucl.ac.uk. All application materials, including reference letters, must be received by the deadline of 4 January 2019.
Informal enquiries regarding the vacancy can be made to Dr. Amelie Saintonge (a.saintonge @ ucl.ac.uk).
