The selected candidate will work within the Strasbourg astronomical Data Centre (CDS) to provide data science expertise for the operation of the EOSC Future Project. | ▸ more | Activities:
The selected candidate will provide expertise for the use of data access techniques and visualisation tools for the EOSC Future Science Projects in the area of multi-messenger astrophysics. This will involve the application of techniques for the indexation of astronomical data using the standards and tools that have been developed in the astronomical Virtual Observatory framework, in particular the Hierarchical Progressive Survey (HiPS) and Multi-Order Coverage map (MOC) systems. The activities also include the development and presentation of training materials for the use of astronomy data interoperability systems in the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). This work will involve interaction with the technical and scientific staff of the CDS as well as with the ESCAPE and EOSC Future partners.
Skills:
The role would suit candidates with a research background with strong skills in data science techniques.
- Expertise in astronomical data analysis or data science.
- Expertise with astronomical data (observational or simulation).
- Experience with Python language tools and notebooks.
- Experience with Virtual Observatory tools.
- Experience with astronomical visualisation would be beneficial.
- Good communication skills and ability to present work to technical and scientific audiences.
- Interest in contributing to the development of data sharing techniques and practices for Open Science.
- English, spoken and written at level of C1.
- Doctorate in astrophysics or a degree from an engineering school (or equivalent experience).
Work Context:
The Strasbourg Astronomical Data Centre (CDS) is dedicated to the collection and dissemination of astronomical data and information, as well as to the development of innovative techniques for the scientific exploitation of very large data sets. The CDS provides the SIMBAD reference database, the VizieR service for astronomical catalogues and tables published in scientific astronomical journals, the Aladin interactive sky atlas and the CDS portal. The CDS also contributes to the development of the Astronomical Virtual Observatory. (For more information, see http://cds.unistra.fr)
The CDS is participating in the ESCAPE and EOSC Future projects funded by the European Commission. ESCAPE is the "European Science Cluster of Astronomy & Particle physics ESFRI research infrastructures?. ESCAPE addresses the open science challenges shared by ESFRI infrastructures in the fields of astronomy and particle physics (CTA, ELT, EST, FAIR, HL-LHC, KM3NeT, SKA) as well as other pan-European research infrastructures (CERN, ESO, JIVE, EGO-Virgo). EOSC Future is a European funded project to integrate, consolidate, and connect e-infrastructures, research communities, and initiatives in Open Science. EOSC Future project includes the support of science projects that will serve as show cases of the use of open science tools and services. The CDS goals in the project are to support the use of Virtual Observatory services in EOSC to serve the scientific needs of the ESCAPE communities, and to develop training materials for scientific use of the systems.
Renumeration and starting date:
Remuneration : 2487 to 3157 euros gross per month depending on experience.
The position is for an initial 12 month contract as a Research Engineer with possibility for extension. The starting date is expected to be September 2022.
