Postdoctoral Researcher Position in Computational Cosmology | Closing date: 2024-10-25 Contact: Dr Mariana Jaber |
The Center for Theoretical Physics PAS in Warsaw, Poland, is offering a postdoctoral position in computational cosmology for the PAIRS (Pairwise Velocities in the Context of the Cosmic Web) project. The role involves analysing galaxy velocities and spatial distribution in the cosmic web to constrain key cosmological parameters. Ph.D. in relevant fields required (post-2017). No teaching duties.

Interested candidates should submit their application documents electronically to the email address rekrutacja@cft.edu.pl by October 25, 2024. | ▸ more | The Director of the Center for Theoretical Physics PAS announces a competition for one post-doctoral researcher position in computational cosmology at the Center for Theoretical Physics PAS (CTP PAS) in Warsaw, Poland. The position is part of the research project SONATA 19 PAIRS: Pairwise Velocities in the Context of the Cosmic Web, funded by the National Science Center (project registration number: 2023/51/D/ST9/02919). The project is led by Dr. Mariana Jaber.
This research programme aims to extract valuable information from galaxy velocities and their spatial distribution within the cosmic web. The primary objective is to derive robust, independent constraints for key cosmological parameters. This involves predicting the relative infall motions of galaxy pairs using a unique combination of analytical and numerical templates.
The salary will be higher than the usual Polish post-doc rate and will amount to 117 000PLN (~27 000 EUR) per annum (before taxes and social security contribution). There is also a dedicated travel budget of 2500 EUR per year and 2500 EUR for personal computing equipment.
SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS
The scope of the project puts special emphasis on the analysis of numerical simulations and advanced data analysis using computational techniques. Experience in working with cosmological simulations, Montecarlo sampling techniques, and/or practical knowledge of handling halo trees will be an added value.
The position will be available initially for one year, with a possible extension for up to 2 years, subject to satisfactory performance. The successful applicant can also benefit from the group?s close links with SDSS, LSST and 4MOST consortia.
We seek candidates with a Ph.D. degree (awarded no earlier than in 2017*) in astronomy, physics or computational sciences.
*This date may be extended by any period of official maternity or paternity leave; please contact us for further details.
SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS
Interested candidates should submit their application documents electronically to the email address rekrutacja @ cft.edu.pl by October 25, 2024, indicating the reference number of the announcement MJ/15/2024:
1. Cover letter,
2. Brief research statement (max. 3 pages + references),
3. CV and publication list in a single PDF file,
4. At least two letters of recommendation,
5. Signed GDPR clause (can be downloaded from https://euraxess.ec.europa.eu/jobs/261294)
BENEFITS
This role does not involve teaching responsibilities. However, there are opportunities to deliver lectures within the Center for Theoretical Physics, which can be compensated separately. Candidates are also encouraged to pursue other sources of funding available within the CFT or from the National Science Center (NSC).
SELECTION PROCESS
Selected candidates will be invited for an interview in the first week of November (November 4-8), and the results will be announced by November 15. The position will remain open until a suitable candidate is found. For further information, please contact Dr. Mariana Jaber (jaber @ cft.edu.pl).
The Center for Theoretical Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences is an equal-opportunity employer. Women and members of underrepresented groups are particularly encouraged to apply.
