Post-doctoral position at UniTo on the kinematics of stars in dwarf galaxies or hypervelocity stars in the Milky Way | Closing date: 2018-11-15 Contact: Antonaldo Diaferio |
The Dept. of Physics of the University of Torino (UniTo) invites applications for a one-year post-doctoral research position in the group led by Prof. Antonaldo Diaferio and Prof. Luisa Ostorero. The position can be extended to a second year, depending on performance. | ▸ more | The University of Torino participates in the design of a future international astrometric space mission conceived to perform astrometric measurements to micro-arsecond level precision, exceeding by a factor of 20 to 50, depending on star brightness, the precision of Gaia, the ongoing international space astrometric mission launched in 2013.
The successful candidate is expected to work on one of the following projects, depending on expertise and interest:
1. Extra-galactic Origin of the Milky Way Hypervelocity Stars
The successful candidate will run numerical simulations to quantify the phase-space distributions of hypervelocity stars observed in the halo of the Milky Way that originate from the gravitational interaction between the Milky Way and its satellite galaxies. These hypervelocity stars can probe the formation history of the Milky Way and its satellites and the dark matter distribution in the Milky Way outer halo, thus constraining current models of the formation of cosmic structures.
2. Dark Matter Distribution in Dwarf Galaxies
The successful candidate will model mock catalogues of stars in dwarf galaxies to quantify the sensitivity required by future observations to discriminate among different distributions of dark matter that depend both on the properties of the dark matter particle and on the model of the formation of cosmic structures.
At the beginning of the appointment, a PhD in Physics or Astronomy or equivalent is required. Experience in gravitational dynamics and/or N-body simulations is highly desirable.
Salary will be 24,000 EUR/year gross. Research budget for travel and other expenses will be provided. No teaching or other duties are required for this position. The standard benefits of the Italian contracts for post-doctoral fellowships will apply.
Applications should consist of a one-page statement of research interest, a curriculum vitae with a statement of experience relevant for this position, an expression of preference for one of the two projects, and a list of publications. Applications should be sent by e-mail to Prof. Antonaldo Diaferio (antonaldo.diaferio @ unito.it). In addition, candidates should arrange for three letters of reference to be sent to the same address. For further enquiries, please contact Prof. Antonaldo Diaferio (antonaldo.diaferio @ unito.it). All correspondence should be sent by-email.
Applications will receive full consideration until the position is filled. In any case, the selection procedure will terminate by November 15, 2018. The negotiable starting date of the appointment is January 1st 2019.
