Postdoc/intermediate researcher position in observational cosmology with Euclid | Closing date: 2019-01-31 Contact: Stéphane Paltani |
We offer a postdoctoral/intermediate-level research position at the Department of Astronomy, a research institute of the University of Geneva to support the activities in the Euclid mission in the domain of photometric redshifts. | ▸ more | Euclid is a mission of the European Space Agency with the goal of understanding the properties of the dark universe. It is planned for launch at the end of 2021. The Department of Astronomy has been involved in ground-segment activities for space missions since 1995 with the creation of the INTEGRAL Science Data Centre; it is now involved in several other scientific missions, with more than 30 people working on such projects. The Department of Astronomy is in particular an important member of the Euclid collaboration; it is hosting the Swiss Euclid Science Data Center and holds the responsibility of producing the photometric redshifts for the Euclid mission. The postdoc is proposed in the framework of this collaboration.
We are looking for an astrophysicist with a Ph.D. in observational cosmology or galaxy evolution with a strong interest in data science. The position can be offered as an early-career postdoc or as an intermediate-level researcher, depending on the candidate?s experience. The successful candidate shall demonstrate experience with photometric surveys in the optical or infrared and with photometric redshifts. In addition, a strong interest in data science (algorithms; advanced statistics; machine-learning methods, etc.) is also required. The successful candidate is expected to perform research activities within the Euclid photometric-redshift group, but may in addition conduct an independent research program in a related field. He or she will in particular be involved in different project aspects of the computation of photometric redshifts for Euclid, in particular testing and validation. He or she will become a member of the Euclid Consortium, participate in meetings dedicated to this mission, and interact regularly with the software engineers attached to the project.
Candidates should send a motivation letter, a curriculum vitae, a publication list and a description of research interests and plans to be sent to the e-mail address below. In addition two reference letters must be sent separately to the same e-mail address. The position is for a duration of at least two years.
All correspondence should be sent by e-mail, with the subject line containing 'Euclid Postdoc'. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. For applications or for further information, please contact:
