Click here to apply online via our recruitment portal: https://recruitment.skatelescope.org/vacancy/science-data-processing-software-architect-388332.html | ▸ more | The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) is a global project to build a multi-purpose radio telescope that will play a major role in answering key questions in modern astrophysics and cosmology. Thirteen countries are now participating in the project, with others engaged in discussions regarding possible membership. Facilities for the new telescope will be located in South Africa and Australia, with our headquarters in a purpose-built building at Jodrell Bank, Cheshire, UK. SKA HQ currently houses around 80 staff but has just undergone a major expansion to accommodate up to 150 staff as the project moves towards construction and operation of the SKA telescopes.
Negotiations between the governments of SKA member countries to establish the SKA Observatory as an Inter-Governmental Organisation (IGO) have recently concluded; the IGO is expected to be established in late 2020.
The Role
The SKA Computing and Software team are looking for a talented Science Data Processing Software Architect to work with other architects and system engineers to ensure the data processing systems for the two telescopes are fit for purpose, providing the architectural quality needed for a system that will have to last, and be continually developed, for decades. The system will be based on designs recently submitted by an external design consortia which have recently completed a critical design review.
Key Responsibilities, Accountabilities and Duties
The main functions of this role will be to:
- Work with the SKA Architecture team using processes based on the Scaled Agile Framework to advise and lead software development teams based around the world
- Develop the SKA Data Processing system architecture and standards so that they are consistent across the SKA
Mandatory Knowledge, Skills and Experience
The successful applicant for this role will have significant:
- Experience in the design and architecture of large data analysis and processing systems.
- echnical expertise in one or more of:
-Radio Astronomy Data Processing Systems
-Large data-flow processing systems
-A comparable system that can be demonstrated to have similar characteristics, e.g. data analytics or supercomputing systems
- Experience with the formalisms and requirements of software architecture standards (e.g. UML, ISO/IEC 42010, SEI Views and Beyond)
- Demonstrated understanding and enthusiasm for working based on lean/agile principles
- Excellent communication and influencing skills with highly specialised project teams and stakeholders, across international boundaries and time zones, involving a wide range of cultures and backgrounds
- A flexible team player who is adaptable to change
- The ability to travel to SKA partner sites world-wide (circa one week 4-6 times per year)
Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Experience
The ideal candidate would also have:
- experience in managing a small team of technical staff
- knowledge of the architecture of the SKA Science Data Processing and Pulsar Search Systems
