Click here to apply online via our recruitment portal: https://recruitment.skatelescope.org/vacancy/it-operations-specialist-linux-406864.html | ▸ more | The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) is a global project to build a multi-purpose radio telescope that will play a major role in answering key questions in modern astrophysics and cosmology. Thirteen countries are now participating in the project, with others engaged in discussions regarding possible membership. Facilities for the new telescope will be located in South Africa and Australia, with our headquarters in a purpose-built building at Jodrell Bank, Cheshire, UK. SKA HQ currently houses around 90 staff but has just undergone a major expansion to accommodate up to 150 staff as the project moves towards construction and operation of the SKA telescopes.
Negotiations between the governments of SKA member countries to establish the SKA Observatory as an Inter-Governmental Organisation (IGO) have recently concluded; the IGO is expected to be established in late 2020.

The Role
The purpose of this role is to implement, maintain and improve server and service operations within SKAO Site(s) and in Cloud platforms. The role holder will Interface with all staff and provide expertise to stakeholders as required, supporting the development of services from the programme, especially in the realms of Linux-based systems and native cloud developments.
The role reports to the Head of Information Technology and is part of a small multi-disciplinary team of technical specialists based at the Head Office. The team ensure that an international team including Astronomers, Project Managers, Engineers and Software Developers who are building the largest radio telescope in the world have the technological tools and services they need to ensure effective communication and collaboration.
Key Responsibilities, Accountabilities and Duties
- Operation of Linux-based physical and virtual servers including their implementation/installation, maintenance and optimisation
- Operation and management of server-based and serverless services in Public Cloud infrastructure such as but not exclusively Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud
- Securing and patching Linux-based and related technologies to appropriate levels
- Operating, implementing and maintaining web-hosting services based on Linux technologies
- Operating, implementing and maintaining Cloud and local database services
- Achieving high availability (and continuity) of services through appropriate use of duplication, replication, disaster recovery and backup and restore technology and services
- Provision and securing of remote access to systems and applications
- Supporting the installation, maintenance and optimisation of, often open source, applications on servers and Cloud platforms and as Software as a Service
- Continual development of event management/monitoring and automation to improve service and reduce manual overheads
- Perform installation and upgrading of scientific software packages including astronomical data reduction tools
- Work as part of the team to support of the wider Information & Communications Technology (ICT) services including incident, request & problem ticket management, device builds and support of the communications and presentation technologies in the HQ
- Would also be required to undertake any other duties within the individual's capabilities as may be reasonably required.

Mandatory Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- Relevant university degree-level education or equivalent experience
- Considerable experience (typically at least 4-5 years) with Linux-based systems and software including:
1) compilation and installation of software, especially open source
2) backup and restore, securing and patch management
- Experience of maintaining Private and Public Cloud services
- Knowledge and experience with ?as a Service? technologies including Platform, Database, Software and serverless/container Cloud offerings
- Programming/scripting experience and capability across multiple platforms
- Knowledge of configuration management methods and tools
- Able to plan work and problem solve, individually and as part of a team, to optimise service and meet deadlines in a dynamic and collaborative environment
- Able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with an international team that spans a wide range of sectors (commercial and academic), cultures and backgrounds.
- Flexible team player who is adaptable to change and demonstrates a commitment to high-quality service provision
- Willing and able to work, on occasion outside of normal business hours, including evenings and weekends to meet the needs of an international organisation.
Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- Knowledge and background with IT Service Management disciplines and Frameworks such as ITIL and Change Management
- Experience of specific software provisioning, configuration management, and application-deployment tools.
- Experience of scientific computing
- Knowledge and experience in Microsoft-based technologies supplementing the team capability
- Knowledge of enterprise networks (local area, wireless, wide area)
- Experience with Apple and Google device and mobile device technologies and device management systems
- General interest in Astronomy and related sciences and technologies
- Certification held in industry/community - recognised disciplines/technologies pertinent to the role
