Hamburg Observatory, an institute of the Department of Physics at Hamburg University, invites applications for the position of a Software Engineer to work on the development of the 4MOST Public Archive. | ▸ more | Responsibilities:
We are looking for a talented and dedicated individual to support an astronomical instrumentation project in the areas of database and software development.
Hamburg Observatory is a member of the consortium that is currently building one of the most powerful astronomical instruments of the next decade: 4MOST will observe more than 30 million celestial objects and thus provide breakthroughs in many areas of astrophysics.
To enable the scientific exploitation of this massive dataset the project requires a modern infrastructure in terms of databases, web services and visualisations.
The successful applicant will play a central role in the development of this project and will contribute to its success in a challenging and international environment.
Requirements:
University degree (Master or similar) in Computer Science, Software Engineering, any of the Natural Sciences or similar.
Required expertise and personal skills:
- Fluent in Python preferably at least one other programming language (e.g. C or C++, R, Java or similar)
- Proficiency in Django
- Excellent proficiency in databases (SQL)
- Experience with web programming
- Proficiency in common office applications
- Ability to work in a team
- Very good communication skills
