We work with a wide range of data partners to chart the world's oceans in order to develop and serve world leading software and data solutions to commercial shipping companies, navies and maritime organisations. Our products ensure safe navigation and global trade efficiency and support other marine activities including economic development, environmental protection, resource exploration and utilisation, scientific research and security and defence.
Her Majesty?s Nautical Almanac Office (HMNAO) ? sits within UKHO?s Operations Division?s Scientific Analysis Group. HMNAO is a specialist team whose purpose is to provide solutions to astronomical and celestial navigation problems and to provide astronomical data to a wide variety of customers, both military and civil, including the public.
The role
The purpose of this post is to support the delivery of the HMNAO product portfolio schedule. You will be responsible for:
? Analysing astronomical data and producing almanacs and other publications/web content/software in support of customers of HMNAO products and services.
? Supporting Technical Leads, in software development and documentation for HMNAO products and services (e.g. Publication software, NavPac)
? Developing and maintaining close working relationship with the United States Naval Observatory (USNO)
? Participating in the work of the IAU (International Astronomical Union).
What we are looking for
If you have a passion for astronomy/navigation and thrive on working in a small, close-knit technical team, then this could be the role for you.
We are looking for candidates who have the tenacity to analyse large volumes of numerical data and the ability to work with a high level of attention to detail to ensure a consistent and accurate output. You will have a degree/postgraduate qualification level, or equivalent experience, in mathematics (e.g. numerical analysis, vector/matrix manipulation) or physics related discipline and will be computer literate with experience of programming languages (e.g. Fortran, Python etc.).
