|SKA Observatory: Software System Engineer||Closing date: 2021-09-09
Contact: Human Resources
|An amazing opportunity for a talented system engineer with experience in large agile software projects, particularly in the context of astronomy, physics or related fields.|
|At the SKAO we are coordinating a global effort to deliver one of the largest science facilities on the planet. The SKAO telescopes will be next-generation instruments that will help to answer key questions in astrophysics, drive technological innovation and support human capital development.
More than a dozen partner countries and over a thousand scientists and engineers around the world are already on board, making the SKA project an international collaboration like no other, and one of the most ambitious science and engineering endeavours of the 21st century.
Headquartered in the UK, with telescope sites in Australia and South Africa, the SKAO will be one observatory operating two telescopes, an endeavour spanning three continents. Multinational by design, in early 2021 the SKAO became an intergovernmental organisation, one of only a select handful of science infrastructures to do so worldwide.
Our Global HQ is located near the buzzing city of Manchester at the historic Jodrell Bank Observatory, a UNESCO World Heritage site located in the Cheshire countryside. It is home to a rapidly expanding international team of more than a hundred, working in a highly collaborative and inclusive way, in coordination with SKAO teams in Australia and South Africa as part of a global astronomy and engineering community.
Being part of Team SKA means contributing to something extraordinary: a uniquely exciting project to advance human knowledge that will last for decades. In return, we offer a diverse multicultural working environment, 30 days annual leave plus public holidays, a generous pension scheme, regular social events, a family-friendly environment and much more. Come and join us!
An amazing opportunity for a talented system engineer with experience in large agile software projects, particularly in the context of astronomy, physics or related fields.
The SKAO System Engineering group is looking for a talented engineer who has significant experience in the development and deployment of large-scale software systems.
The SKAO System Engineering group maintains the technical baseline and compliance of the SKA Project. It manages system requirements and interfaces, and ensures the technical adequacy of verification along with analysis for change control. The group works closely with other business functions such as Project Engineering, Software Engineering, Project Management and Mission Assurance to meet project milestones.
The Software System Engineer will report to the Senior Systems Engineer for the Observatory, but will spend most of their time working with the Software Solution Level team ensuring the software delivered satisfies the timescales and technical requirements of the wider project. The SKA software development processes are based on the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) and the Software Solution Level team works at the Solution level of a Large Solution SAFe implementation, managing the work of the three agile release trains that make up the SKA Software SAFe implementation.
The Software System Engineer will collaborate with the Assembly Integration and Verification groups from the MID and LOW telescopes to translate system level technical requirements into more appropriate forms of specifications for software (such as use cases) and will work with the Lead Product Manager, Lead Architect and SAFe Program Teams to plan and agree the subset of requirements to be implemented in every 3 month Program Increment agile cycle, and then follow this up by agreeing ways to verify the resulting implementation.
In line with our Flexible Working Policy, flexibility around working hours may be accommodated in agreement with the Line Manager where operationally viable, ensuring telescope delivery is not impacted.
Key Responsibilities, Accountabilities and Duties
The main functions of this role will be to:
- Work with the Product Managers and Architects to plan and agree the set of requirements to be implemented in the SKA project?s three-monthly Program Increment planning cycle.
- Understand and interpret user requirements, system, and product requirements, functional and non-functional requirements.
- Define tests to demonstrate design compliance, ensuring end-to-end traceability.
- Plan, organise, and manage major software releases to ensure they are available when needed with the correct functionality.
- Manage system baseline documents, including systems requirements documents, interface documents, engineering diagrams, and instrumentation diagrams throughout the whole lifecycle of the system.
- Support system integration, verification and validation to test and analyse performance and compliance.
- Solve organisational and project challenges as they pertain to system engineering activity.
- Travel to SKAO partner sites worldwide as necessary and when possible in the context of any international travel restrictions (typically for up to one week, 4-6 times per year).
