Expanding our View of the High-z Universe with Infrared Galaxy Surveys | Closing date: 2019-02-07 Contact: Prof. Karina Caputi |
Since the advent of the Spitzer Space Telescope more than a decade ago, we are making continuous progress in our understanding of the high-z Universe through the analysis of infrared galaxy surveys. Over the last few years, in particular, very ambitious Spitzer programmes have been devoted to deep infrared galaxy surveys over large (~ 1 sq.deg) areas of the sky, as for example the SMUVS Exploration Science Programme (PI Caputi). This new powerful combination of deep+wide galaxy surveys has opened up a completely new window in parameter space for the study of galaxy evolution. | ▸ more | This PhD project involves the scientific exploitation of the new Spitzer deep+wide galaxy surveys, as well as multi-wavelength ancillary images, in order to study different aspects of galaxy evolution at high redshifts. In addition, the PhD student will analyse forthcoming JWST data to further investigate the nature of high-z infrared galaxies.
Requirements:
The candidate must hold a Master degree in Astronomy, Physics, or related disciplines. Previous research experience, an excellent academic record, and good command of English with excellent oral/writing skills will be considered for the selection.
