PhD position in Astroparticle Physics at the University of Crete | Closing date: 2020-08-15 Contact: Vasiliki Pavlidou |
The Department of Physics at the University of Crete invites applications for a PhD position in the field of astroparticle physics, under the joint supervision of Prof. Vasiliki Pavlidou at Crete and Dr. Tonia Venters at NASA Goddard on the astrophysics of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays and their intergalactic propagation. | ▸ more | We are looking for applicants with a Masters degree in physics, astrophysics, or related fields, with at least some background in particle and astroparticle physics (ideally Masters level research), such as ultra-high-energy cosmic rays, very-high-energy gamma rays, and their interactions with intergalactic photon fields. Desired technical skills include programming in C++ and Python; some experience with simulations and/or modeling would be a plus. The position includes full benefits, as well as a budget for travel and research expenses. The PhD candidate will be based in Heraklion, Crete, and will collaborate closely with the joint astrophysics group of the Department of Physics of the University of Crete, the Institute for Theoretical and Computational Physics, and the Institute of Astrophysics of FORTH ( https://www.ia.forth.gr/), as well as with Goddard astrophysicists in the US. Interested candidates should send a CV and brief description of past research, as well as contact information to three potential references to pavlidou @ physics.uoc.gr and tonia.m.venters @ nasa.gov. The position will remain open until filled. We envision a starting date in the fall of 2020.
