The astronomy group at Nicolaus Copernicus University (Torun, Poland) invites applications for a PhD position in extragalactic astronomy, working on the determination of the time evolution of the star formation rate density in the early Universe out to redshifts as high as ~7. | ▸ more | The project involves working with the observational data, collected with the state-of-the-art telescopes, like ALMA, JCMT, Herschel, Spitzer, Hubble, etc., using stacking techniques in order to quantify the contribution from faint galaxies, writing your own codes and summarising the results in the form of the scientific paper.
Torun is located in the heart of Poland and is renowned for its beautiful medieval town centre, its lively cultural scene and its vibrant student life. The institute is located some 15km north of the Torun city center in the Piwnice Observatory - home of the 32-m RT-4 radio telescope, being a part of the European VLBI network.
The position is fully funded for 3-3.5 years. We offer a scholarship of 3000 PLN per month, raising to 3500 PLN per month after the first half of the degree. In addition, the position has a generous funding available for conferences and research visits.
Applicants should have an MSc degree in astronomy or a closely related field and a good English speaking and writing skills. Previous experience with programming will be an advantage.
