PhD students in Radio Astronomy at the Institute of Astrophysics - FORTH, Crete (Greece) | Closing date: 2022-05-01 Contact: Carolina Casadio |
The Institute of Astrophysics at the Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (IA-FORTH), located in the island of Crete (Greece) is expecting to recruit two PhD students in Radio Astronomy, who will work, under the supervision of Dr. Carolina Casadio and they will collaborate with an international team of experts in the field. The positions will be funded by the European Research Council Starting Grant (agreement No 101040021), entitled "SMILE: Search for milli-lenses to discriminate between dark matter models". | ▸ more | The PhD students are expected to mainly work on the calibration, analysis and interpretation of radio Very Long Baseline Interferometric (VLBI) data of sources in the SMILE sample as well as actively participate in follow-up observations of gravitational lens candidates and the scientific exploitation of the results. They will also have the possibility of close collaborations with experts in signal processing and machine learning at the Signal Processing Laboratory of the Institute of Computer Science - FORTH, in Crete. Moreover, they will be offered the opportunity of spending extended training/collaboration periods at the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy (MPIfR) in Bonn Germany, at the Radio Astronomy/VLBI department lead by Prof. J. Anton Zensus, as well as at the group of Prof. Anthony C. Readhead at Caltech (USA).
The net monthly salaries for the PhD student positions will be ~1100 Euros. The expected starting date for the postdoctoral and PhD student positions is summer 2022 and possibly not later than November 2022. The PhD fellows will need to be admitted and registered as students at the Department of Physics of the Univ. of Crete. The recruitment process will remain open until the positions are filled.
