Astrophysics in the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) Era

Aims and scope

Starting 9th December 2021 we finally have in orbit an X-ray polarimeter after more than 40 years from the pioneer OSO-8. IXPE 'the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer is opening a new window in Astronomy, adding polarimetry to timing, spectral and imaging techniques for investigating physical and geometrical properties of celestial sources.

Almost all the classes of X-ray emitting sources can be probed by polarimetry. These include: neutron-stars or black-holes binaries, ordinary X-ray pulsars, magnetars, and active Galactic Nuclei (either radio-loud or radio-quiet). Thanks to its imaging capabilities, IXPE is further mapping magnetic-field topologies and turbulence both in supernova remnants, clarifying their role in accelerating galactic cosmic-rays, and in pulsar-wind nebulae, shedding light on their complex morphology.

After 5 months of operations, is now time to show not only astrophysical expectations but also preliminary results. A mission overview talk will present IXPE and its performances followed by specific invited talks by the topical working group chairs complemented by invited talk from recognized scientist in the field. No contributed talks or posters are foreseen for this session.
