Public talksAPOD Turns 30: The Best Space Images Ever from NASA's Astronomy Picture of the DayPublic talk by Prof. Robert J. Nemiroff on June 24th, starting at 7pm in Boole 4, UCC. Free, no booking required Abstract: NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) debuted on June 16, 1995: about 30 years ago. Some of the best and most notable images that have occurred in astronomy - and therefore appeared on APOD - over these 30 years are reviewed. These include the most visually spectacular, the most scientific, the most educational, and the most popular. Stories - some surprising - about APOD's creation and development are shared. Bio: Dr. Robert Nemiroff is a Professor of Physics at Michigan Technological University and a Fellow of the American Physical Society. He and Dr. Jerry Bonnell co-founded APOD in 1995 at NASA after some speculative discussions about the potential value of the developing World Wide Web. In 2022, APOD's founders received the inaugural Outreach Prize from the International Astronomical Union. Astronomy on Tap CorkA series short talks being given by astronomers from around the world on June 25th, starting at 7pm in The Francisan Well Brewpub. Free, but booking essential.
