Lunch Session LS1
29 Jun 2026
Getting the most out of ESO data: a hands-on session on the ESO Science Archive and data processing tools
Aims and scope
Join ESO during lunch on Monday, June 29 for an interactive session dedicated to helping you fully exploit the scientific potential of the ESO Science Archive and data processing tools. Following an introductory overview of recent developments, the session will focus on hands-on exploration and discussion, with ESO staff available to work directly with participants on their specific scientific needs. Whether you are searching for archival observations, revisiting existing datasets, or preparing new analysis workflows, this session will help you identify and efficiently use both raw and science-ready ESO data products.
A central highlight will be the presentation of EDPS (ESO Data Processing System) --a new graphical and interactive environment designed to modernize user data reduction and bring ESO data processing into the ELT era. Participants will also discover the growing ecosystem of ESO Jupyter Notebooks, developed to enable powerful and reproducible browsing of the Science Archive.
Bring your laptop, your questions, and your science cases: ample time will be dedicated to practical interaction, live demonstrations, and direct support from ESO experts.
This session is ideal for researchers interested in accelerating archive-based science, improving data-processing workflows, and preparing for the next generation of ESO data products.
Programme
The topics covered will include, but not necessarily be limited to:
- Getting the most out of my ESO data: How do I process my data?
- What data can I use from the ESO Science Archive to implement my scientific idea or complement my own data?
- How do I browse the ESO Science Archive to identify and retrieve the data I need?
Invited speakers
ESO staff will present the functionalities of the ESO Science Archive and data processing tools and will help you with your specific questions.
Scientific organisers
Magda Arnaboldi (ESO Survey Scientist), Ashley Barnes (ESO Science Archive Group), Valentin D. Ivanov (ESO Science Data Quality Group), Martino Romaniello (Session Chair; Head, ESO Back-end Operations Department), and Chiara Spiniello (Head, ESO Science Data Quality Group).
