The University of Namibia has an opening for a faculty position at its Main Campus in Windhoek for an Associate Professor/Senior Lecturer in Physics with focus on (mm-wave) Radio Astronomy to play a leading role in the Africa Millimetre Telescope. | ▸ more | The University of Namibia has an opening for a faculty position at its Main Campus in Windhoek for an Associate Professor/Senior Lecturer in Physics with focus on (mm-wave) Radio Astronomy.
The candidate is supposed to play a leading role in the development of the Africa Millimetre Telescope (AMT) science programme as well as the according technical specifications, and in the implementation of the telescope, all in collaboration with the international AMT team. The candidate is expected to establish a virtuous research programme for single-dish science as well as possible VLBI (Global mm-VLBI array, European VLBI Network, African VLBI Network, etc.) science besides and beyond the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT). Further, involvement in the SKA and MeerKAT will be desirable and involvement in VHE gamma-ray astronomy with H.E.S.S. and in optical astronomy is possible. Memberships to both the EHT as well as H.E.S.S. collaborations are possible and UNAM staff members also regularly have access to time on the 11m Southern African Large Telescope (SALT).
Additionally, the candidate is required to provide effective lecturing to undergraduate and postgraduate students of courses/modules in Physics (e.g. Quantum Mechanics, Astrophysics, Modern Physics), supervise student projects at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, assist in curriculum review and development, administrative tasks at departmental and school levels, engage in community service at various levels, and perform any other duties as may be required.
While the position itself is permanent in the Department, permanent appointments of non-Namibian citizens at the University of Namibia are prohibited by law. Appointments of non-Namibian citizens will be on contract basis of 5-year terms, renewable at the end of every 5 years.
For exceptional candidates, the University may decide to appoint them at (Full) Professor level.
