The Hamburger Sternwarte invites applications for a postdoctoral position in the group of Jochen Liske to work in the area of galaxy evolution. | ▸ more | Universität Hamburg invites applications for a Research Associate in accordance with Section 28 subsection 3 of the Hamburg Higher Education Act (Hamburgisches Hochschulgesetz, HmbHG).
The position commences on 01 July 2017. It is remunerated at the salary level TV-L 13 and calls for 39 hours per week.
The fixed-term nature of this contract is based upon Section 2 of the Academic Fixed-Term Labor Contract Act (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz, WissZeitVG). The term is fixed for a period of 2 years.

Responsibilities:
Duties primarily include research and teaching. Research associates can also pursue independent research and further academic qualifications.
Specific Duties:
Research in the area of galaxy formation and evolution. Using the photometric and spectroscopic data of the "Galaxy And Mass Assembly" (GAMA) survey the successful applicant will investigate the extent to which mergers drive the evolution of galaxies. Of particular interest is the connection between mergers and (i) star formation, (ii) galactic nuclear activity and (iii) the evolution of the structure and morphology of galaxies. The position entails teaching duties at the level of 4 hours p/w.
Requirements:
A university degree in a relevant subject plus doctorate. Background in galaxy formation and evolution. Prior experience in analysing large dataset, experience in working with wide-field surveys, familiarity with scientific programming, ability to work in a team, excellent communication skills and fluency in English are welcome. Severely disabled applicants will receive preference over equally qualified non-disabled applicants.
