To capitalize on the University of Vienna involvement in the Gaia mission we are looking for a PhD candidate to work on star formation topics with Gaia. The candidate will work in particular on the characterization of the recently discovered Blue Streams (Bouy & Alves 2015), their origin, and implications for local and global star formation. We are looking for a highly motivated PhD student with a good knowledge of data analysis, visualization, and statistics (preferably with open source tools, e.g., Python, R) and familiarity with astronomical research. | ▸ more | Gaia is an ambitious ESA mission to chart a three-dimensional map of our Galaxy, with its first data release towards the end of 2016. Gaia will provide unprecedented positional and radial velocity measurements with the accuracies needed to produce a stereoscopic and kinematic census of about one billion stars in our Galaxy.
