Writing is a vital component of a modern career in astronomical research. Very few researchers, however, receive any training in how to produce high-quality written work in an efficient manner. This session is a short workshop which constitutes a step-by-step
guide to writing in astronomy. We will concentrate on how to write scientific papers, and address various aspects including how to crystallise the ideas that underlie the research project, and how the paper is constructed considering the audience and the chosen
journal. We also describe a number of grammar and spelling issues that often cause trouble to writers, including some that are particularly hard to master for non-native English speakers. The workshop is aimed primarily at MSc. and Ph.D. level students who are presented with the daunting task of writing their first scientific paper.
Programme This workshop is based on our paper Knapen, Chamba & Black (2021) and will be divided in three parts, as follows:
Morning: 9 - 10:30 Introduction to workshop, writing and thinking COFFEE BREAK 11:15 - 11:45 Henri Boffin (ESO): Communicating your science (invited) 11:45 - 12:45 Journals, submission and writing guide LUNCH (Summary of this workshop at LS7 "Writing and Communicating your science" - session led by Henri Boffin) Afternoon: 17:30 - 19:00 Writing mechanics Wrap-up/Summary END Invited speakers The three organisers will also be the facilitators of the workshop.
