Special Session SS30  29 June 2022

Scientific Writing for Astronomers*

News: *We have now closed our sign up form! Thank you to all those who signed up. We will email accepted participants soon.
**This session is only open to those who apply and get accepted (see details below) Deadline 27 May 2022 . Applicants will be emailed regarding their participation.

Aims and scope

Writing is a vital component of a modern career in astronomical research. Very few researchers, however, receive any training in how to produce high-quality written work in an efficient manner. This session is a short workshop which constitutes a step-by-step guide to writing in astronomy. We will concentrate on how to write scientific papers, and address various aspects including how to crystallise the ideas that underlie the research project, and how the paper is constructed considering the audience and the chosen journal. We also describe a number of grammar and spelling issues that often cause trouble to writers, including some that are particularly hard to master for non-native English speakers. The workshop is aimed primarily at MSc. and Ph.D. level students who are presented with the daunting task of writing their first scientific paper.

The workshop is intended to be highly interactive with hands-on writing exercises and discussion and is therefore limited to 30 participants . We ask candidates to register their interest in advance in the sign up form linked here (now closed) and in the likely event of oversubscription we will select participants taking into account their gender and geographical origin, giving preference to applicants from institutes or countries where similar workshops are not normally available. Due to the limit in the number of participants, we will make any handouts or online material discussed during the workshop accessible to the broader EAS community on this webpage and during LS7 (see details below).
