Symposium S8  10-11 July 2023

Early assembly of galaxies with JWST spatially resolved spectroscopy and photometry

Aims and scope

The symposium aims at discussing what we are learning about the formation and assembly of galaxies with JWST with a special emphasis on spatially resolved studies using spectroscopy (IFU, MOS, slitless) and imaging of galaxies at cosmological distances and in the nearby Universe. We final goal is examining together what pathways we must follow in the coming years, and how we can exploit synergies with other observatories.

The proposed symposium revolves around what is possibly the major breakthrough provided by JWST in the galaxy evolution field, given its unprecedented resolution at the near- and mid-IR wavelengths -- showing different components of galaxies in a resolved manner for the first time. We remark that this EAS meeting comes at the right time to discuss the findings from the first year of observations and plan strategies for future projects.

More specific goals of the symposium follow:

  • Presentation of first year results from JWST about galaxy formation and coevolution with supermassive black holes.
  • Special focus on galaxy assembly studies at different redshifts using 2D spectroscopy (IFU, slitless, MOS) and photometry (imaging modes).
  • Discuss synergies with ground-based multi-wavelength observatories.
  • Implications of JWST results for future facilities (e.g., ELT or SKA).
  • Promote collaborations and discuss strategies for the coming years.
  • Bring observers and theorists to common ground for the next JWST cycles.
