Special Session SS16
10 July 2023
First science results from WEAVE, the next-generation spectroscopic survey facility of WHT
News:
3 July — final programme available on the EAS website!
Aims and scope
WEAVE is a major new spectroscopic facility for the William Herschel Telescope. Approximately 70% of the available telescope time will be devoted to eight community-led surveys over the coming five years, while 30% of the time on the telescope will be available to the Isaac Newton Group (ING) community for open-time proposals, and to the wider astronomical community through the International Time Programme (ITP). As of late 2022, WEAVE is completely installed on the telescope and instrument commissioning is currently in progress, with WEAVE seeing its scientific First Light in December 2022 in the Large IFU fibre mode. WEAVE Survey operations will commence following an upcoming period of Science Verification.
Given these developments, a Special Session to highlight the first science results from WEAVE is very timely, and presenting the capabilities of WEAVE to the wider European audience is appropriate given the opportunities to apply for time with WEAVE through the ITP, or in collaboration with scientists from the ING partner countries (UK, The Netherlands, Spain).
The first morning session of the WEAVE Special Session (Monday 10 July, Dressing room 1) will focus on providing the audience with the most recent updates from the WEAVE Project, including where we stand with WEAVE commissioning, science verification, and plans for the start of Survey operations. First science results with WEAVE will also be presented, as well as an introduction to the WEAVE data flow for those interested in applying for Open Time with WEAVE. This will be followed by two sessions covering a range of science topics through invited and contributed talks and ePoster presentations by various members of the WEAVE Science Team.
