Special Session SS40  13 July 2023

The mm transient sky: present opportunities and perspectives

Aims and scope

Time-domain astronomy and in particular the transient sky is becoming a prominent topic in the multi-messenger era, enabled by a myriad of wide-field telescopes in the optical/IR and radio wavelengths and a fleet of space telescopes observing in X-rays and gamma-rays. At millimeter (mm) wavelengths, the study of transients and time-variable objects has been limited to a few pioneering observations in the past. Following the advent of ALMA, with unprecedented sensitivity, and of upgrades of other existent mm observatories, observations of variable objects like X-ray binaries, Gamma-Ray Bursts, Supernovae, Tidal Disruption Events or Protostars at the short variability timescales needed for these objects are now a reality. Monitoring programmes are also crucial for studies of flares, for example in blazars or protostars. In this Special Session we want to showcase the advancements in this field in the past years and discuss how to overcome the challenges of time-domain observations, in particular in view of upcoming mm facilities like CMB-S4, which will allow daily discoveries of mm transients to be followed up by other facilities, or the ngEHT.

Programme

This Special Session is divided in 3 different blocks with a duration of 1.5 hours each. The main topics are:

  • Observational studies at mm wavelengths of GRBs, FRBs, magnetars, X-ray binaries, Fast Blue Optical Transients, Tidal Disruption Events...
  • Observational studies at mm wavelengths of protostars, stars and AGN
  • Panel discussion on how to better address the challenges for the discussed science in present and future mm facilities (panel members include E. Humphreys (ALMA), G. Keating (SMA) and V. Ramakrishnan (ngEHT))

We strongly encourage early career researchers to apply for contributed talks.

Invited speakers

  • Agnes Kospal (Konkoly Observatory, Hungary)
  • Tom Russell (INAF, Palermo, Italy)
  • Ioannis Myserlis (IRAM, Spain)
  • Antonio de Ugarte Postigo (Observatoire de la Côte d'Azur, Nice, France)
