Extragalactic PhD Position at Department of Astrophysics Vienna | Closing date: 2023-04-11 Contact: Bodo Ziegler |
The Department of Astrophysics at the University of Vienna offers a University Assistant (prae doc) position within the extragalactic astrophysics group of Prof. Bodo Ziegler for 4 years starting from May 2023 or later by agreement. | ▸ more | Area of work:
This position is for PhD research work in the field of physical parameters of galaxies and their evolution: https://galaxy.univie.ac.at/
Important aspects are galaxy kinematics and structure, stellar populations and star formation. The topic will be within scaling relations and their evolution. New techniques in determination of structural components and in dynamical modelling will advance the study beyond the traditional analysis. The main source for the investigations will be observational data, in particular spectroscopy in the optical/NIR wavelength regime (e.g. ESO-VLT MUSE & KMOS) for high- redshift galaxies. Thus, experience in reduction of spectra and their analysis will be a main criterion in the selection process. Basic knowledge of astronomical software and good knowledge of English are prerequisites.
In addition to the research towards a Dr degree, contributions are expected within the group, the department of astrophysics and within international projects as well as with proposal preparations for new observational data and third-party funding and also with student education.
Degree of Employment:
Contracts are subject to Austrian federal law regarding Universities and regulated by a collective bargaining agreement with standardized salaries, health insurance, and long-term care for nominal work of 30.0 hours/week.
The PhD student will be fully embedded in the Vienna International School of Earth and Space Sciences: https://visess.univie.ac.at/
Profile:
Applicants must have a diploma or master degree in astrophysics or physics with specialization in astronomy. Basic knowledge of astronomical software, in particular for reduction of spectra, and very good knowledge of English are required. More details here: https://jobregister.aas.org/ad/04bd53f2
Application:
Full application is only possible via VISESS: https://visess.univie.ac.at/how-to-apply/
