| PhD position in computational astrophysics at Ghent University | Closing date: 2026-02-20 Contact: Maarten Baes |
| Ghent University (UGent) invites applications for a fully funded PhD position in computational astrophysics, focused on the development and application of advanced radiative transfer techniques to cosmological galaxy simulations. | | ▸ more | Project description
The PhD project aims to bridge state-of-the-art galaxy formation models with multi-wavelength observations. The successful candidate will:
- extend the SKIRT radiative transfer code (https://skirt.ugent.be/) in the X-ray and radio domain,
- apply SKIRT to the COLIBRE cosmological galaxy formation simulations (https://colibre.strw.leidenuniv.nl/) to generate realistic synthetic observables across the entire electromagnetic spectrum,
- compare these predictions directly with observational data to constrain galaxy and AGN physics.
This project offers a unique opportunity to work at the interface of theory, numerical simulations, and observations.
Supervision, collaboration and research environment
The PhD student will be supervised by Maarten Baes and will work closely with:
- the UGent SKIRT team, and
- international collaborators in Leiden (Joop Schaye), ESTEC (Bert Vander Meulen and Matteo Guainazzi), and Belgrade (Marko Stalevski).
We offer
- a generous four-year stipend,
- substantial funding for conferences and extended research visits abroad,
- access to state-of-the-art HPC facilities and cutting-edge simulation software,
- a dynamic and international research environment.
Ghent is a vibrant university city with a rich cultural life and a strong international community. UGent is a highly ranked research university with over 45,000 students.
Requirements
- MSc degree in (astro)physics or a related field,
- strong intrinsic motivation and ability to work both independently and in a team,
- (desired:) experience with scientific programming (Python and/or C++).
Application Instructions
Applications should be sent by mail to maarten.baes @ ugent.be and should include
- a curriculum vitae,
- a motivation letter describing research interests, past achievements, and suitability for the project,
- contact details of two referees.
Applications are due on 20 February 2026. The project term can start as early as 1 May 2026; a later starting date (up to October 2026) is negotiable.
UGent encourages applications from candidates of all backgrounds.
