Roeland van der Marel, Andrea Bellini, Tony Sohn, and other team members to improve our dynamical understanding of globular clusters and galaxies in the nearby Universe through measurement and interpretation of their proper motions.
The main projects focus on the dynamics of dwarf galaxies and the Milky Way and Andromeda satellite systems, and the multiple stellar populations in globular clusters, respectively. Involvement in projects related to the Galactic Center and stellar streams is also possible. The research involves either observational data analysis, theoretical dynamical modeling, and/or data-model comparisons. The work is focused on Hubble Space Telescope projects, but includes also anticipated James Webb Space Telescope Guaranteed Time observations, study of and comparison with Gaia measurements, analysis of related datasets from other (e.g., ground-based) facilities, and development of new techniques for proper motion measurements through combination of data from different observatories. Some time may be available for independent research or new projects in related areas.
STScI offers a dynamic postdoc environment, with an active program of journal clubs and science talks, a postdoc mentoring program, and a prime location on the Johns Hopkins University campus. The upcoming launch of the James Webb Space Telescope makes this an exciting time to come to Baltimore. STScI offers an excellent benefit package, competitive salaries, and a stimulating work environment. STScI?s pay is commensurate to the year of Ph.D. The nominal start date is Fall 2020, but earlier start dates are possible and encouraged. Initial appointments are for two years, with likely renewal for a third year (subject to satisfactory performance and continued funding). Applicants must hold a Ph.D. degree. Candidates may have either observational, theoretical, or mixed interests. Observational
candidates should ideally have technical expertise in high-precision photometric and/or astrometric analysis of imaging data of resolved stellar populations (preferably with HST). Theoretical candidates should ideally have technical expertise in modeling or data-model comparisons relevant to the dynamics, structure, and/or stellar populations of globular clusters, nearby galaxies, or the Local Group.
