Research Position in data intense radio astronomy | Closing date: 2022-01-10 Contact: Dominik Schwarz |
Big Bang to Big Data (B3D) is an interdisciplinary cluster in Nordrhein-Westfalen (Germany) for research,
technology and education in the field of data-intense radio astronomy. It brings together radio astronomy
and astrophysics with data science and data technology. We are a group of eight universities and research
institutes in NRW. We are involved in the development, operation and exploitation of leading radio
observatories (incl. ALMA, APEX, Effelsberg, FYST/CCAT-prime, LOFAR, MeerKAT, SKA, SOFIA) and the
handling and analysis of their radio data, or bring in data science and data technology expertise. W | ▸ more | At Bielefeld University we are engaged in the fields of radio cosmology and pulsar astronomy, as well as the
data storage and management aspects of larges radio astronomy infrastructures like LOFAR, MeerKAT and
the SKA. In the context of B3D we will lead the work package on graduate education.
Your Tasks / research tasks (100 %):
- curriculum development for an integrated astronomy and data science graduate education
- development of new research questions by identifying synergies between LOFAR, MeerKAT and other radio astronomy instruments
- support of fund raising, especially application for a DFG reserach training group
- independent research
Your Profile
We expect:
- completed scientific degree
- completed doctorate in a field closely related to data-intensive radio astronomy, e. g. physics, astronomy, computer science, data science, etc.
- relevant research experience as evidenced by publications and conference presentations
- very good communication skills
- fluency in spoken and written English
Preferred experience and skills:
- experience in project management
- radio astronomical and astrophysical research experience
- knowledge in the field of IT
- knowledge or research experience in the field of data science
- experience in the acquisition of third-party funds
- proficiency in the German language, both spoken and written
