Click here to apply online via our recruitment portal: https://recruitment.skatelescope.org/vacancy/software-quality-engineer-405613.html | ▸ more | The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) is a global project to build a multi-purpose radio telescope that will play a major role in answering key questions in modern astrophysics and cosmology. Thirteen countries are now participating in the project, with others engaged in discussions regarding possible membership. Facilities for the new telescope will be located in South Africa and Australia, with our headquarters in a purpose-built building at Jodrell Bank, Cheshire, UK. SKA HQ currently houses around 90 staff but has just undergone a major expansion to accommodate up to 150 staff as the project moves towards construction and operation of the SKA telescopes.
Negotiations between the governments of SKA member countries to establish the SKA Observatory as an Inter-Governmental Organisation (IGO) have recently concluded; the IGO is expected to be established in late 2020.

The Role
The SKA software is being designed and developed by a number of teams that are located world-wide. In order to ensure software is developed, tested, and integrated coherently and smoothly, the SKA Organisation must clearly define our expectations with a well-defined set of processes and tools.. This activity will be supported by a small team at the SKA Organisation, acting as part of the SAFe System Team, developing and maintaining the Continuous Integration and Delivery platform used by agile development teams.
Key Responsibilities, Accountabilities and Duties
The main functions of this role will be to:
- Lead the SKA SAFeŽ System Team in the implementation and maintenance of the Continuous Delivery pipeline infrastructure. (Source code repository, workflow manager, issue tracker, CI system, documentation system, automated testing infrastructure etc.)
- Work with the SKA Software teams to define and implement the Continuous Delivery pipeline for the SKA software system.
- Work with the SKA SAFeŽ System Team to support agile development teams in adopting DevOps practices.
- Maintain and update the SKA Software Engineering Process documentation.
- Work with other staff in the SKA Office to develop processes to support software quality during procurement and construction, in accordance with DevOps practices.
- Support system-wide integration and verification.
Mandatory Knowledge, Skills and Experience
The successful applicant for this role will bring:
- Experience in the development and support of large software systems.
- Experience in leading a technical team providing vision and technical leadership.
- Experience in modern processes for efficiently developing high quality software ? for example DevOps, continuous integration, agile processes, test driven development etc.
- Demonstrated understanding and enthusiasm for working based on lean/agile principles.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, to an audience that spans a wide range of cultures and backgrounds.
- A flexible team player who is adaptable to change.
- Able & willing to travel overseas occasionally.
Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Experience
The ideal candidate would also be:
- Experience in developing Python and C/C++ software in a GNU/Linux environment.
- Familiar with methods and algorithms used in Radio Astronomy Interferometry.
- Familiar with the formalism for, and requirements of, quality control environments such as ISO9000.
