The Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP) invites applications for a PhD student position in dwarf galaxies (m/f/d). The position is in the research group led by Dr Marcel S. Pawlowski, and part of the project "Cosmic Choreographies - Studying Systems of Satellite Galaxies and Their Phase-Space Correlations". The successful applicant will also become part of Prof. Maria-Rosa Cioni's Dwarf Galaxies section and collaborate with other researchers at the AIP. | ▸ more | The PhD project studies satellite galaxy systems, with particular emphasis on the Milky Way system and signatures of the infall of dwarf galaxies in groups. It will involve analysing cosmological simulations, modelling orbital dynamics, and using observational data such as provided by the Gaia mission and other instruments.
We are looking for a new member of our internationally diverse team, who is interested in working and learning together while contributing to a culture of open debate. Applicants should hold a Master's degree (or equivalent) in astrophysics or a related discipline at the time of taking up the position. Any of the following skills would be advantageous: experience in scientific coding (preferentially Python), experience with running numerical simulations, analysing cosmological simulations, or observational studies of galaxies or proper motions. Advanced English skills (spoken and written) are a requirement.
The salary is based on the German public service scale (66% TV-L E13). Employer contributions to medical and dental insurance, parental leave, and retirement benefits are included. The position comes with funding for research travel as well as access to training opportunities within the graduate program of the University of Potsdam. The anticipated start date is June 1, 2022, but an earlier or later start can be negotiated.
