PhD position on hot white dwarfs | Closing date: 2023-05-12 Contact: Nicole Reindl |
We are seeking a keen and ambitious PhD candidate to study trans-iron group abundance patterns in hot white dwarfs. The PhD candidate will work in the Heisenberg group led by Dr. Nicole Reindl at the Landessternwarte Königstuhl (LSW) that is part of the Zentrum für Astronomie at Heidelberg University. | ▸ more | Heidelberg is one of the major astronomy hubs in Europe and provides a vibrant and leading research environment. The successful candidate will have access to all ESO facilities and to the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT), and will be expected to analyze a valuable data set currently taken within the HST treasury program "A Treasury FUV Survey of the Hottest White Dwarfs".
Applicants should hold a Master's degree (or equivalent) in astrophysics or a related discipline at the time of taking up the position. Experience with stellar spectroscopy and/or model atmosphere calculations will be an asset. Advanced English skills are a requirement.
The position is for a period of 3 years. The preferred starting date is October 1, 2023, but may be negotiated. The position is funded by the German Aerospace Center according to the German public service scale (up to 66% TV-L E13). Funds will be provided for travel, computing, and publications.
