| LINDSAY SCHOLARSHIP: RADIO AND OPTICAL TRANSIENTS | Closing date: 2024-05-24

| Applications are invited for a Postgraduate Research Lindsay Studentship, starting in October 2024. | | ▸ more | The ability to quickly detect transients has grown enormously in the last decade due to new optical wide-field surveys, radio arrays and multi-messenger facilities. Transients can originate from gravitational wave events; fast radio bursts; supernovae; active galactic nuclei; tidal disruption events; accreting binaries and stellar flares (to name just a few). This project aims to use radio telescope arrays, such as LOFAR, to detect outbursts from new radio sources which would then trigger the GOTO facility to detect the optical counterpart. We would envisage the student to become a full team member of the GOTO and the Irish LOFAR Consortia and the LOFAR 2.0 Large Proposal teams.
Applicants must have achieved, by the start data, a 1st or upper 2nd class (I or II.1 or equivalent: http://tiny.cc/degree_equiv) in a Masters or four-year undergraduate degree, in astrophysics or a related field. The successful candidate would be enrolled at Trinity College Dublin. This PhD studentship is open to EU/EEA/UK applicants (subject to confirmation of status). The successful applicant will receive a tax-free stipend of 25k euros per year and their University fees would be paid in full, for four years.
